1. Do I qualify for surgery?
Obesity surgery candidates must have a BMI of > 35 with some exceptions. You
can calculate your BMI here
2. Will my insurance cover surgery?
That depends on your insurance plan and Company. Some insurers are very helpful,
some are not.
3. What if insurance won't cover the costs?
We have multiple finance options available including
Care-Credit
4. What is the first step?
The mandatory first step is to attend a free monthly information seminar. If you
are interested in surgery, an application will be provided at that time.
5. How much work will I miss?
With a lap band, about 2 days, with a LRNY, 2-3 weeks.
6. Are there complications from surgery?
Yes. This is major surgery and it does have risks. These are explained in detail
the monthly information sessions. Call our office at 208-706-5285
for the schedule.
7. I don’t snore. Do I still need a sleep study?
Yes. Over 80% of morbidly obese surgical candidates have sleep apnea.
8. How long does the evaluation take?
Our evaluation is extensive and includes the free monthly information session, a
nutrition evaluation, psychological testing, sleep study, and a full evaluation
and labs from your primary doctor. This can take as little as a few days if much
of this is already done, or a few months if you are just starting out.
9. What sort of weight loss can I expect with a
band?
Everyone is different, but most studies show a 60-65% excess weight loss over time.
10. Why do I need the Psychological testing? I am not Crazy!
We don’t think you are crazy. Bariatric surgery is very stressful and can be complicated
by pre-existing eating disorders and depression. Our testing is to ensure that we
can help you make good, informed choices, both before and after surgery.
11. Do you remove the Gallbladder?
Only if you have symptoms. All patients with a gallbladder and no symptoms are put
on a medication to decrease their likelihood of needing their gallbladder removed.
12. Can the surgery be reversed?
Both operations are like marriage; meant to last a lifetime, but sometimes things
don’t work out. The LRNY is essentially irreversible. The band can be removed with
a simple operation.
13. What vitamins will I need for a Lap Band?
A multivitamin once/day
14. How much do fills cost?
Fills for our patients are free for the first year.
